I am overjoyed with the election of our new president, but saddened with the passing of hate fueled Proposition 8 in California. I am supremely disappointed and angry with the Mormon church’s funding of the proposition to end same sex marriage.
Since when are hate and bigotry Christian values? Way to go your frightened lemmings! My LGBT friends deserve the same rights as any other citizen. It’s strange that we’ve managed to elect a black president and spit in the face of progress, all at once. I’m not much for prayer, but I pray that the hope of our new president will flow into civil rights and this wrong will be corrected.

Amen.
Thank you.
I agree. 100%.
This wrong will be righted.
punchlinewalking,
I still don’t understand how it happened.
mrod,
It needs to be.
I am astonished as well. I thought surely good old blue California would see through this bigoted, hateful, and discriminatory amendment. I’ve started reading No More Goodbyes, which you recommended to me, and I think if every Mormon read that book, they would know that their support of Prop 8 is definitely hurtful to everyone, including people that they know and love who are gay. It is definitely not what Jesus would do. One day our entire country will accept gays as equals, but we have a lot of progress to make before that happens, and this is definitely a step backward.
I was shocked, as well. I would hope that Mormons would feel differently about their bigoted stance on homosexuality after reading No More Goodbyes, but honestly, I don’t have that much faith in them. Hatred is most definitely not a value Jesus embraced…it is disgusting and sad to see a group of people who thrive on reliving their own persecution (which is another post entirely), while taking choice away from other people. FUCK THAT.
How are you liking No More Goodbyes? I actually wasn’t able to finish it…I was pretty depressed at the time and had to put it down. Maybe I’ll revisit it when the semester is over?
Another book you may like: Hitched!: Wedding Stories from San Francisco City Hall. It is personal accounts of the couples who were married during 2004…how they met and the story of their marriages. I happened upon a reading of it in a bay area bookstore…and loved it. You should definitely check it out.
I am lucky that CT was able to recognize the religiously-based BS that was being thrown innocently on our ballot. our question one was an indirect attack on our recently passed legislation to allow gay marriage. it posed the question of “what would happen if the citizens were able to speak up regarding the consitution rather than waiting for our state government to handle it”… which in and of itself sounds appropriate enough. until you hear that it’s funded by the christian coalition or other gay-marriage-hating organization that you realize the ulterior motives.
BUT, we prevailed… and I have (slightly) renewed faith in the state that I sometimes wish I didn’t have to live in… apparently “yes we can” doesn’t just relate to obama.
I just cannot believe that people think it is their RIGHT to tell people who to love. Marriage is a contract between 2 people, not a religious issue. This prop would not have affected any religion’s beliefs, period. I am so sad to live in a state that promotes this kind of hatred.
kt,
As a California-t0-Utah transplant, I am saddened by this. As a Utah resident and former Mormon, I am DISGUSTED.
Zanny,
I’m sad and I don’t even live there anymore.
Word. My jaw dropped when I read that that passed. I mean, it’s CALIFORNIA! If an amendment like that can pass in California, is there ANY state where it will fail? What is WRONG with people?? I don’t get it.
This passing is the only downside I can think of this election. I don’t get way this stuff is anyone’s concerns other than those in the relationship. Well, I think the same thing about women’s productive rights and we know that can get heated too.
Somehow this will get overturned. We can overcome hate.
There’s talk of boycotting Mormon and Catholic owned businesses. No more Marriotts, JetBlues, Bonneville Communications, Stephen Covey crap, Franklin planners…
It’s been further acknowledged that boycotting UT would be collateral damage to all those who DO support the gay and lesbian communities – I doubt folks will go that route.
I’m hoping every time the Mormons start humping their BoMs… they bleed. Granted, I was a bad Christan. What makes anyone think I’d be some saintly pagan?
Pants – your message about the text message made me smile:
“I wish I had a time machine so I could punch Joseph Smith in the nuts.”
Over and out. I have a headache with Prop 8 all over it.
Not letting gay citizens marry is like not letting gay citizens drive a car.
Obviously, the Mormon church, or any other church for that matter, doesn’t have to recognize gay marriage, but for the state to discriminate against law-abiding taxpayers? Horseshit.
I am a Utah-to-California transplant and i voted No on Prop 8.
Now I am doubly disgusted, with my old home and now my new one
I am so disappointed that a slight majority of Californians fell for that crap. It’s STUPID AND WRONG TO DENY THESE PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO MARRY!!!
Come on, everyone knows marriage is for a man and a woman. Or maybe a man and several women at once, depending on where you are, or a man and several women in a row, ’cause marriage may be “sacred” but divorce is just fine, but a man and a man, or a woman and a woman? That’s clearly wrong, because…because…well, I personally can’t think of a reason, but I’m sure some bigot somewhere will enlighten us. Gah.
So I have a new theory. There are a lot of not so bright people in California along with the smart ones, right? So my thought is that they read prop 8 incorrectly and thought, oh yeah, we should totally allow gay marriage. I’m voting Yes in favor of gay marriage! That’s the only thing I can hope for to explain why so many people made the mistake of voting yes on 8.
If I were gay, I’d totally marry you. Or Ellen.
werd. i’m so sad about prop 8.
3 things :
Steve Young gave $50,000 to vote no to prop 8. Go Steve!
Melissa Etheridge will stop paying taxes in California to protest prop 8 saying “I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen.” Go Melissa !
My parents are visiting my brother in LA and on their way home from dinner last nite, traffic was diverted around La Ciénaga because protesters surrounded a Mormon temple.
Although Tuesday was a night that changed history, unfortunately some people can’t let go of the past.
This makes zero sense to me. I’m not sure how one can celebrate not allowing people equal rights. That’s no reason to celebrate.
Egan, they are celebrating saving marriage! Um….wha? This “reason” never fails to make me laugh.
I’m sick about this happening. And shocked and amazed it happened in California. I can’t in good conscience remain a Mormon any more, even if I’m an inactive one. I will not have my name associated with such a bigoted organization that has thus far stood on the wrong side of equal rights in every major incident where the choice could have been made to stand on the side of right but was not.
I am disgusted.
